Walberg's campaign cash tops 2004 fundraising

Former state Rep. Tim Walberg collected more campaign cash in the last three months of 2005 than he did in his entire failed 2004 bid for Congress.
Walberg’s got a Web site now after a couple months of fundraising for the 7th District’s Aug. 8 Congressional Republican primary.
Club for Growth, the Tipton Republican’s biggest Washington, D.C. supporter, collected thousands of earmarked campaign donations, with just a few coming from inside of Michigan.
Walberg raised $162,977 from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, according to Federal Election Commission report filed Friday, Jan. 27. He now has $163,065 cash on hand, according the report filed by campaign treasurer Jeffrey A. Yeutter.
That’s still nothing compared to Walberg’s opponent, U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz, R-Battle Creek.Schwarz had $339,986 on hand as of Oct. 14, the last time he filed a report with the FEC. Year-end reports were due Jan. 15.Schwarz and Walberg began a war over words via press releases in the past week. Expect this to only get nastier as August nears.
Walberg will kick off his campaign at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Under the Oaks Park in Jackson.
Walberg, a preacher, recently retired as division manager at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, according to his website still under construction.
Walberg raised $150,638 and spent $147,647 in his unsuccessful 2004 bid for Congress, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Now that Walberg has topped his 2004 fundraising and its only February, it’s safe to expect he will take to the TV airwaves like a preacher on the pulpit.
Only Schwarz, Ann Arbor attorney Brad Smith and former state Rep. Gene DeRossett aired TV ad campaigns during the 2004 six-man Republican primary. DeRossett dropped nearly $450,000 of his own money on TV ads that showed two cartoon character men holding hands with a message saying something like, “this is Joe Schwarz’s version of marriage.”
